    Abundance profiles and cool cores in galaxy groups

    Using data from the Two Dimensional XMM-Newton Group Survey (2dXGS), we have examined the abundance profile properties of both cool core (CC) and non cool core (NCC) galaxy groups. The ten NCC systems in our sample represent a population which to date has been poorly studied in the group regime. Fitting the abundance profiles as a linear function of log radius, we find steep abundance gradients in cool core (CC) systems, with a slope of -0.54+/-0.07. In contrast, non cool core (NCC) groups have profiles consistent with uniform metallicity. Many CC groups show a central abundance dip or plateau, and we find evidence for anticorrelation between the core abundance gradient and the 1.4 GHz radio power of the brightest group galaxy (BGG) in CC systems. This may indicate the effect of AGN-driven mixing within the central ~0.1r_500. It is not possible to discern whether such behaviour is present in the NCC groups, due to the small and diverse sample with the requisite radio data. The lack of strong abundance gradients in NCC groups, coupled with their lack of cool core, and evidence for enhanced substructure, leads us to favour merging as the mechanism for disrupting cool cores, although we cannot rule out disruption by a major AGN outburst. Given the implied timescales, the disruptive event must have occurred within the past few Gyrs in most NCC groups.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    No need for broad-spectrum empirical antibiotic coverage after surgical drainage of orthopaedic implant infections

    Purpose: Empirical broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment for orthopaedic implant infections after surgical lavage is common practice while awaiting microbiological results, but lacks evidence. Methods: This was a single-centre cohort study from 1996 to 2010 with a follow-up of twoyears. Results: We retrieved 342 implant infections and followed them up for a median of 3.5years (61 recurred, 18%). Infected implants were arthroplasties (n = 186), different plates, nails or other osteosyntheses. The main pathogens were S. aureus (163, 49 methicillin-resistant) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (60, 45 methicillin-resistant). Median duration of empirical antibiotic coverage after surgical drainage was threedays before switching to targeted therapy. Vancomycin was the most frequent initial empirical agent (147), followed by intravenous co-amoxiclav (44). Most empirical antibiotic regimens (269, 79%) proved sensitive to the causative pathogen, but were too broad in 111 episodes (32%). Cephalosporins and penicillins were used only in 44 and ten cases, respectively, although they would have covered 59% of causative pathogens identified later. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that neither susceptible antibiotic coverage (compared to non-susceptible; hazard ratio 0.7, 95% confidence interval 0.4-1.2) nor broad-spectrum use (hazard ratio 1.1, 0.8-1.5) changed remission rates. Conclusions: Provided that surgical drainage is performed, broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage does not enhance remission of orthopaedic implant infections during the first threedays. If empirical agents are prescribed from the first day of infection, narrow-spectrum penicillins or cephalosporins can be considered to avoid unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotic us

    The Two-dimensional XMM-Newton Group Survey: z<0.012 groups

    We present the results of the 2-dimensional XMM-Newton Group Survey (2dXGS), an archival study of nearby galaxy groups. In this paper we consider eleven nearby systems (z<0.012) in Mulchaey et al. (2003), which span a broad range in X-ray luminosity from 10^40 to 10^43 ergs/s. We measure the iron abundance and temperature distribution in these systems and derive pressure and entropy maps. We find statistically significant evidence for structure in the entropy and pressure of the gas component of seven groups on the 10-20% level. The XMM-Newton data for the three groups with best statistics also suggest patchy metalicity distributions within the central 20--50 kpc of the brightest group galaxy, probed with 2-10 kpc resolution. This provides insights into the processes associated with thermalization of the stellar mass loss. Analysis of the global properties of the groups reveals a subclass of X-ray faint groups, which are characterized by both higher entropy and lower pressure. We suggest that the merger history of the central elliptical is responsible for both the source and the observed thermodynamical properties of the hot gas of the X-ray faint groups.Comment: 18 pages, ApJ, 646, 143, 200

    A study was made to evaluate the adaptability of full cast crowns in preclinical practice of the fifth year students at Matsumoto Dental College in 1984. Gap space between the inner surface of the full cast crown and the surface of the abutment tooth was investigated with silicon material. The results were as follows: 1) The adaptability of crowns was better at the mesial surface than at the distal surface, and better at the lingual surface than at the buccal surface. 2) The adaptability of crowns was better at the axial walls, especialy in the middle, than in the cervical margin. 3) At the occulusal surface, the adaptability of crowns was worst

    The motion of trees in the wind : a data synthesis

    Interactions between wind and trees control energy exchanges between the atmosphere and forest canopies. This energy exchange can lead to the widespread damage of trees, and wind is a key disturbance agent in many of the world’s forests. However, most research on this topic has focused on conifer plantations, where risk management is economically important, rather than broadleaf forests, which dominate the forest carbon cycle. This study brings together tree motion time-series data to systematically evaluate the factors influencing tree responses to wind loading, including data from both broadleaf and coniferous trees in forests and open environments. Wefoundthatthetwomostdescriptive features of tree motion were (a) the fundamental frequency, which is a measure of the speed at which a tree sways and is strongly related to tree height, and (b) the slope of the power spectrum, which is related to the efficiency of energy transfer from wind to trees. Intriguingly, the slope of the power spectrum was found to remain constant from medium to high wind speeds for all trees in this study. This suggests that, contrary to some predictions, damping or amplification mechanisms do not change dramatically at high wind speeds, and therefore wind damage risk is related, relatively simply, to wind speed. Conifers from forests were distinct from broadleaves in terms of their response to wind loading. Specifically, the fundamental frequency of forest conifers was related to their size according to the cantilever beam model (i.e. vertically distributed mass), whereas broadleaves were better approximated by the simple pendulum model (i.e. dominated by the crown). Forest conifers also had a steeper slope of the power spectrum. We interpret these finding as being strongly related to tree architecture; i.e. conifers generally have a simple shape due to their apical dominance, whereas broadleaves exhibit a much wider range of architectures with more dominant crowns

    The hierarchy-of-hypotheses approach: A synthesis method for enhancing theory development in ecology and evolution

However, there is a need for complementary tools that help to (a) organize evidence, (b) organize theory, and (c) closely connect evidence to theory. We present the hierarchy-of-hypotheses (HoH) approach to address these issues. In an HoH, hypotheses are conceptually and visually structured in a hierarchically nested way where the lower branches can be directly connected to empirical results. Used for organizing evidence, this tool allows researchers to conceptually connect empirical results derived through diverse approaches and to reveal under which circumstances hypotheses are applicable. Used for organizing theory, it allows researchers to uncover mechanistic components of hypotheses and previously neglected conceptual connections. In the present article, we offer guidance on how to build an HoH, provide examples from population and evolutionary biology and propose terminological clarifications.The workshops were funded by Volkswagen Foundation (Az 92,807 and 94,246).     The production of tt‾ , W+bb‾ and W+cc‾ is studied in the forward region of proton–proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98±0.02 fb−1 . The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets. All measured cross-sections are in agreement with next-to-leading-order Standard Model predictions.The production of ttt\overline{t}, W+bbW+b\overline{b} and W+ccW+c\overline{c} is studied in the forward region of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98 ±\pm 0.02 \mbox{fb}^{-1}.     Observation of the B0 → ρ0ρ0 decay from an amplitude analysis of B0 → (π+π−)(π+π−) decays

    Proton–proton collision data recorded in 2011 and 2012 by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 , are analysed to search for the charmless B0→ρ0ρ0 decay. More than 600 B0→(π+π−)(π+π−) signal decays are selected and used to perform an amplitude analysis, under the assumption of no CP violation in the decay, from which the B0→ρ0ρ0 decay is observed for the first time with 7.1 standard deviations significance. The fraction of B0→ρ0ρ0 decays yielding a longitudinally polarised final state is measured to be fL=0.745−0.058+0.048(stat)±0.034(syst) . The B0→ρ0ρ0 branching fraction, using the B0→ϕK⁎(892)0 decay as reference, is also reported as B(B0→ρ0ρ0)=(0.94±0.17(stat)±0.09(syst)±0.06(BF))×10−6

    Observation of the decay B0s→ψ(2S)K+π−

    The decay B¯s0→ψ(2S)K+π− is observed using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fraction relative to the B0→ψ(2S)K+π− decay mode is measured to be B(B¯s0→ψ(2S)K+π−)B(B0→ψ(2S)K+π−)=5.38±0.36(stat)±0.22(syst)±0.31(fs/fd)%, where fs/fd indicates the uncertainty due to the ratio of probabilities for a b quark to hadronise into a Bs0 or B0 meson. Using an amplitude analysis, the fraction of decays proceeding via an intermediate K⁎(892)0 meson is measured to be 0.645±0.049(stat)±0.049(syst) and its longitudinal polarisation fraction is 0.524±0.056(stat)±0.029(syst) . The relative branching fraction for this component is determined to be B(B¯s0→ψ(2S)K⁎(892)0)B(B0→ψ(2S)K⁎(892)0)=5.58±0.57(stat)±0.40(syst)±0.32(fs/fd)%. In addition, the mass splitting between the Bs0 and B0 mesons is measured as M(Bs0)−M(B0)=87.45±0.44(stat)±0.09(syst) MeV/c2

    The first measurement of C ⁣P{C\!P} asymmetries in the decay Bs0J/ψK(892)0{B_s^0\to J/\psi \overline{K}^{*}(892)^{0}} and an updated measurement of its branching fraction and polarisation fractions are presented. The results are obtained using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb13.0\,fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 and 8TeV8\,\mathrm{TeV}. Together with constraints from B0J/ψρ0{B^0\to J/\psi \rho^0}, the results are used to constrain additional contributions due to penguin diagrams in the C ⁣P{C\!P}-violating phase ϕs{{\phi}_{s}}, measured through Bs0{B_s^0} decays to charmonium.The first measurement of CP asymmetries in the decay Bs0J/ψK(892)0 {B}_s^0\to J/\psi {\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0 and an updated measurement of its branching fraction and polarisation fractions are presented.
